Reiki (pronounced “ray-key”) is a complementary therapy that promotes deep relaxation and natural healing. It is administered by “laying on hands”, on or above the client’s body. It is based on the idea than an unseen “life force energy” (also known as chi/ki or prana) flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If our “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.
It is this same energy that is worked with in Acupuncture, Shiatsu, Tai Chi and Yoga.
Reiki originated in Japan early in the 1900’s and was developed by Mikao Usui. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy”.
The original system was used mainly for self healing and spiritual development. It was only later when it came to the Western world that it became a system to treat others.
Reiki is a holistic therapy that treats the cause of the problem and not just the presenting condition. This means that it can help with a wide range of conditions including stress, anxiety and sleep problems to name but a few.
• Improved mood and emotional well-being
• Reduced stress and increased relaxation
• Better sleep, improved insomnia symptoms
• Pain relief and reduction.
Clinical studies have shown that for people undergoing surgery, Reiki can lower blood pressure, anxiety and pain rates, and that for people with cancer, it can improve anxiety and pain management.
The client will lie on a comfortable treatment table (or can sit upright if preferred).
A short guided meditation may then be used to induce a state of relaxation before the treatment begins.
The practitioner will then place their hands lightly on or over specific areas of the client’s head, limbs and torso. They will typically keep their hands in these positions for several minutes to allow the transfer of energy to take place. They will hold each hand position until they sense that the energy has stopped flowing.
The practitioner often feels heat or pulsing sensations as the energy moves. The client may or may not feel heat. Sometimes they may feel a coolness and the sensation of an air current moving over them. The feeling is generally very comforting and relaxing (clients often fall asleep during a treatment).
A Reiki session lasts approximately 45 min and costs £30.
I relocated from West Suffolk in 2020 and am now based near Fritton on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, close to Lowestoft, Somerleyton and Gorleston on Sea, with easy access from Gt Yarmouth, Beccles and Norwich.
My spacious and comfortable treatment room is in a purpose-built extension of my country cottage in a parkland setting, with duck-ponds behind and just a short stroll from the Caldecott Hall golf course and Barn Works Fitness Spa. There is plenty of free parking available.
I also run sessions two days a week and regular Usui Reiki Training courses with fellow therapist and Healer, Rob Tarry, in the quaint rural village of Congham, near King’s Lynn, with Sandringham and the beautiful North Norfolk coast close by.
Bed and Breakfast accommodation is available on site, if you want to enjoy a treatment as part of a longer break. www.highcottsbanb.co.uk
