Reiki (pronounced “ray-key”) is a complementary therapy that promotes deep relaxation and natural healing. It is administered by “laying on hands”, on or above the client’s body. It is based on the idea than an unseen “life force energy” (also known as chi/ki or prana) flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If our “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.
It is this same energy that is worked with in Acupuncture, Shiatsu, Tai Chi and Yoga.
Reiki originated in Japan early in the 1900’s and was developed by Mikao Usui. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy”.
The original system was used mainly for self healing and spiritual development. It was only later when it came to the Western world that it became a system to treat others.
Reiki is a holistic therapy that treats the cause of the problem and not just the presenting condition. This means that it can help with a wide range of conditions including stress, anxiety and sleep problems to name but a few.
• Improved mood and emotional well-being
• Reduced stress and increased relaxation
• Better sleep, improved insomnia symptoms
• Pain relief and reduction.
Clinical studies have shown that for people undergoing surgery, Reiki can lower blood pressure, anxiety and pain rates, and that for people with cancer, it can improve anxiety and pain management.
The client will lie on a comfortable treatment table (or can sit upright if preferred).
A short guided meditation may then be used to induce a state of relaxation before the treatment begins.
The practitioner will then place their hands lightly on or over specific areas of the client’s head, limbs and torso. They will typically keep their hands in these positions for several minutes to allow the transfer of energy to take place. They will hold each hand position until they sense that the energy has stopped flowing.
The practitioner often feels heat or pulsing sensations as the energy moves. The client may or may not feel heat. Sometimes they may feel a coolness and the sensation of an air current moving over them. The feeling is generally very comforting and relaxing (clients often fall asleep during a treatment).
A Reiki session lasts approximately 45 min and costs £30.
“I have had Reiki and Reflexology treatments by Alison on numerous occasions. I cannot recommend Alison enough - her calm and sensitive nature ensures optimum relaxation. I have had treatments with other practitioners but the experience with Alison is on another level.
I had a Reiki treatment whilst I was experiencing problems with menstrual bleeding and fibroids. I was being treated by the Gynaecological team at my local hospital with little or no effect. During my treatment with Alison, I felt as though my abdomen was being wobbled, vibrated and a lifting sensation.
When I got home after the treatment I passed a very large clot - to this date I have had no further problems with excessive bleeding.”
“I had a wonderful healing session with Alison.
I have suffered with chronic back pain due to a degenerative spinal condition for many years.
Alison’s treatment gave me great relief and I was able to sit down without pain for the first time in 5 years.
I still do get pain, but it is markedly more manageable, and I have a top-up treatment when needed.”
“I saw Alison as I had a long-standing shoulder problem which gave me constant pain.
The treatment was extremely relaxing, so much so that I fell asleep! The heat from Alison’s hands was remarkable, I had never felt anything like it.
My shoulder initially ached a lot after the treatment. When I went for a follow-up, Alison asked me how my shoulder had been, and I realised that I hadn’t felt any pain for several days!
It had gone without me realising it!
What can I say, other than I highly recommend her - thank you Alison.”
